In a recent interview with Kyle Meredith, Pearl Jam’s bassist Jeff Ament talked about the band earning the right to do ‘whatever they want’. With over three decades of activity, Ament reflected on the past few years and shared his insights. He told:
“We’ve talked about a lot in the last three or four years is like how we’ve sort of earned the right to do whatever the f*ck we want to right now. So why wouldn’t we go all the way with that?”
The bassist further explained what they have been talking about for the last few years and mentioned the point they feel like the band’s currently in:
“Saying, ‘Everybody, make a list of the ten things that you want to do in this band before we’re done. Where is the city you’ve never played? Where is the venue you want to go back to? What’s the kind of song you want to write? What’s the cause you wanna get behind within the context of the band?’ You know, those are the sort of things I talk about, so, it feels like we’re sort of at this point where we should be able to turn a big corner. We should be able to.”
According to Ament, having five people in a band sometimes might be a challenge. He described:
“And that’s tough because there are five of us that are pulling the cart. So, sometimes you end up holding the cart in opposite directions, but it’s like just embracing all of that. Embracing everybody’s ideas and everybody’s hopes and dreams and wishes, and styles.”
Though the bassist feels like they deserved whatever they want, some things are still unclear. Being almost done with the new album, the bassist believes that everyone in the band hopes for a new record to come out next year. In the same interview, he said:
“I think everybody hopes that we have a record out next year. If we have a record out next year, that means we’ll probably play a few more shows, and I think there’s a couple places we haven’t played in quite a while, so I think we have stuff penciled in.”
