James Hetfield surely can share a few names when it comes to his ‘favorite bands,’ such as Motörhead and Led Zeppelin, but when it’s time to choose his ‘all-time favorite,’ things might change a bit.

This ‘band’ in question, which Hetfield felt Metallica owed its existence to, had been a game changer even during the vocalist’s early life and later successful musical career. Which band could it be, you’re wondering? Well, let’s check it out.

The rocker was discussing his go-to acts during San Jose Shark Nights in 2015 when the host asked to name his all-time favorite. However, although at first, Hetfield seemed a bit hesitant to choose an ‘all-time favorite,’ possibly out of respect to other bands, it wasn’t much later that he settled on a band. He said:

“ [Choosing your] Favourite all-time band is hard because there is so many… Led Zeppelin is in there, Motörhead, boy… They all offer a little bit different. But if I was stuck for one… [it’s] Black Sabbath.”

When Metallica Praised Black Sabbath As Their Main Influence

This wasn’t the first time Hetfield had complimented the British heavy metal giants. The vocalist, accompanied by his bandmate Lars Ulrich, also praised the band during their Rock Hall Induction ceremony in 2010, stating that ‘without Black Sabbath, there would be no Metallica.’

Hetfield also mentioned how his nine-year-old self had been obsessed with the band, and you can check out below to see his emotional induction speech.
