James Hetfield recently sat down with Touch Tunes for their National Jukebox Day Artist Spotlight, where he reflected on Metallica’s ‘If Darkness Had a Son’ track from 2023’s ’72 Seasons.’
The vocalist shared, “‘If darkness had a son, here I am.’ That lyric was in my phone for a long time and [I] just had to apply it to a song, and it really fits this song really well.”
“Lars is playing a great groove, and the riff is, like, syncopating with it really well,” he added, “Looking forward to this being a live song with a big crowd screaming ‘Temptation!'”
‘If Darkness Had a Son’ saw release as the third single from ’72 Seasons’ and topped Billboard’s U.S. Hot Trending Songs chart. The full album achieved great success in several countries, going Gold in France and Germany and Platinum in Poland. It reached Number 1 on various charts and landed at Number 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200.
Shortly after its release, Metallica took the record on a world tour, finishing the 2024 leg in Mexico City on September 29. Shortly after, they announced 2025 dates for North America and Australia.
The next set of shows will begin in Las Vegas on April 12, 2025. Later that year, the band will perform in Australia with stops in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney. The tour will conclude in Auckland, New Zealand, on November 19.
