Poison frontman Bret Michaels has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Freedom 250 event in Washington, D.C. He shared the statement on his Instagram. The event was originally organized to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary through music and to honor veterans, active military, first responders, teachers, and hardworking Americans.

Michaels addressed the cancellation directly, emphasizing that his decision was not politically motivated but driven by serious safety concerns for himself, his band, crew, and family following threats he described as “completely unfounded and unforgivable.”

“Hello to all my awesome friends & fans, I wanted to jump on here real quick and talk about the upcoming Freedom 250 event in Washington, D.C.,” Michaels said. “When this opportunity was originally presented to my team, it was described as a celebration of our country through music and a chance to honor our veterans, active military, first responders, teachers and hardworking Americans from all walks of life. As the son of a veteran, and coming from a family that has proudly served, that is something I have always been honored to support.”

Michaels went on to explain how the nature of the event appeared to shift from what he had originally agreed to.

“As many of you know, I’ve spent my entire career bringing people together through music, positivity and good vibes,” he continued. “My shows have never been about politics. They’re about giving people a place to come together, have a great time and forget about life’s stresses for a few hours. Unfortunately, what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of. Concerns have also been raised regarding the safety of my fans, band, crew, family and myself, including threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable.”

Michaels concluded by reaffirming his values and the reasoning behind his difficult choice.

“Because of that, I have made the difficult decision to step away from this performance,” he said. “This isn’t about politics. It’s about staying true to what I’ve always believed in. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. That’s one of the freedoms our veterans fought for and something I’ve always respected. But as a father, friend and bandmate, I have to take threats and safety concerns seriously.”

Michaels was not alone in stepping away. His exit is part of a broader wave of artist withdrawals from the Freedom 250 event, as several performers came forward after reportedly learning more about the event’s political ties.

The announced lineup had included Martina McBride, Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, The Commodores, and Flo Rida alongside Michaels, as Fox Baltimore reported. The event was billed as a large-scale music celebration tied to America’s 250th anniversary, with a focus on honoring veterans, active military, first responders, teachers, and working Americans.

However, the event’s political associations quickly became a point of contention. Multiple artists said they had not been informed of any political involvement when they were originally booked, Fox Baltimore noted. Young MC was among those who publicly pulled out, posting on Facebook: “I HAVE INFORMED MY AGENTS THAT I WILL NOT BE PERFORMING AT THE FREEDOM 250 EVENT. The artists were never told about any political involvement with this event.”

Morris Day and The Time and C+C Music Factory were also among the acts reported to have withdrawn from the lineup, The Daily Beast reported. The departures paint a picture of an event that struggled to retain its roster once its political connections became more widely known among the performers.

The wave of cancellations has cast significant uncertainty over the event’s future, TMZ reported. No replacement performers have been announced for any of the vacated spots, including Michaels’, at this time.
