Hollywood Vampires’ Johnny Depp Faces Backlash For Receiving An Award Despite Abuse Allegations

Hollywood Vampires’ guitarist Johnny Depp is set to receive an award, which sparked a backlash due to the present abuse allegations against him.

As you know, Hollywood Vampires’ guitarist and the award-winning actor Johnny Depp’s wife Amber Heard accused him of abuse. She alleged that Depp was verbally and physically abusing her under the influence of substances in her court declaration. Depp denied Heard’s claims and said she was pursuing financial gain, and the pair divorced in January 2017.

In November 2020, the High Court Of Justice ruled that Heard’s 12 out of the 14 violence claims were true. Following the verdict, Depp was forced to resign from his roles in several productions. Following that, in March 2021, the Court Of Appeal rejected his appeal to overturn the verdict.

In September, at the upcoming San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain, Johnny Depp will be honored with the Donostia Award, the festival’s highest honor. The news surfaced less than a year after the High Court Of Justice ruled the abuse claims as accurate, and thus, this award came as a shock.

Recently, Spain’s leading group of female filmmakers condemned the festival’s decision to award Depp. Cristina Andreu, the President of Spain’s Association of Female Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media, told Associated Press that this decision surprised her. She said that this gives the festival a bad name and indicates being a good actor overshadows being an abuser.

Cristina Andreu told Associated Press that:

This speaks very badly of the festival and its leadership and transmits a terrible message to the public: ‘It doesn’t matter if you are an abuser as long as you are a good actor.'”

In 2019, Depp sued Heard over a Washington Post essay for $50 million in which Heard wrote about her experiences with domestic violence. He also alleged that Heard was the abuser. Following that, Heard denied his claims. That case has been delayed and is scheduled to go to trial in April 2022.
