Greg Phillinganes Reveals Receiving Steve Lukather’s Last-Minute Offer To Join Toto

In a recent Instagram post, Greg Phillinganes shared his excitement about a surprise call he received from Steve Lukather, inviting him to join Toto for their upcoming tour.

The keyboardist shared a photo with Toto, along with some from the Emmy Awards, and described his last week as ‘bananas,’ detailing the call he got from Lukather about the tour:

“Happy New Year to you! Man, have we got to catch up… My last week has been bananas! Barely two days into the new year, I get a call from Steve Lukather about joining Toto’s upcoming tour. Next thing I know, I’m rehearsing, doing a photo shoot, and back in Toto!”

A Week Of Surprises For The Musician

Referring to his second Emmy win, his post added:

“As if that isn’t enough, I won my second Emmy for outstanding music direction for the Gershwin Prize tribute to Joni Mitchell, an artist I never imagined even working with! God is good! The tour kicks off on February 9. Hope to see you out there!”

Phillinganes also received a Creative Arts Emmy Award in 2015 for Outstanding Music Direction, thanks to his work as the musical director for the TV special ‘Stevie Wonder: Songs In The Key Of Life.’ He was also the music director for the Grammy Awards in 2016.

Toto’s Upcoming Tour

Toto has a packed schedule with 44 appearances across North America starting on February 9 at Biloxi’s Mississippi Coast Coliseum. The tour includes 30 shows supporting Journey in arenas throughout the United States and Canada, along with 14 additional headline performances. A European tour is also planned for the summer.

This isn’t Phillinganes’ first time with Toto. He first joined the band in 2003 and became a full member in 2005. After leaving in 2008, he returned briefly in 2022, taking over for Dominique Xavier Taplin during the band’s European tour.
