In a recent interview with Ralph Sutton and James Mattern on The SDR Show, Glen Matlock gave details about a moment he shared with Blondie‘s Debbie Harry before they worked together. Matlock reminisced about the time Harry planted a quick peck on his cheek.
Glen fondly recounted the memorable incident during Halloween in New York in 1979 when he played at the Palladium with Iggy Pop. Matlock was pleasantly surprised when Debbie, dressed in a witch costume, approached him and lightly kissed his cheek. This wasn’t the only time he received a kiss on his cheek. When he did a couple of shows at Roseland Ballroom, Uma Thurman also kissed him on the cheeks.
Glen Matlock’s words about getting a peck from Debbie Harry read:
“Well, you know I like to be gentleman, but I mean that was cool, best arrival in New York. It was Halloween; back then, nobody knew what Halloween was in England, and you guys really go for it. The whole audience was in Halloween gear. The Cramps supported us, and I got a little peck on the cheek, only a tiny little pack on the cheek.”
He added:
“I’m a very kissable kind of guy, but it’s a good expression in English. I’ll get away with it sometimes you would say, ‘Oh, thanks for doing that,’ and I’d go, ‘Well, it was the least I could do,’ so maybe the girls think this is the least I could do.”
Debbie’s spontaneous kiss on the cheek during a Halloween show in New York back in the day might have been the initial flame that later evolved into a working relationship. The bassist toured with Blondie and is in talks to be a part of their forthcoming album.
