Geoff Tate recently discussed his upcoming third and final chapter in the band’s classic ‘Operation: Mindcrime’ album series. He shared his thoughts on the musical heaviness and production quality in an interview with The Metal Voice.

The former Queensrÿche vocalist addressed whether ‘Operation: Mindcrime III’ is musically as heavy as the original ‘Operation: Mindcrime’ album, due for release in May.

“Oh, yes. The new one is probably, I guess in the same realm. It’s heavier than ‘Mindcrime I’. I don’t know. I’d have to go back and listen to it again, ‘Mindcrime II’, to see where it compared in the heaviness scale,” Tate said.

Tate emphasized the album’s production quality and recommended listening experience.

“I just hope everybody can give it a spin, check it out. And especially with headphones. It’s a wonderful headphone album. Absolutely. We spent a lot of time dialing all the details in that I find to be very important with the record, is it’s gotta sound good on headphones. And it really sounds great with the mixing and the engineering on it,” he continued. “John Moyer, Disturbed bassist, who produced the album did an amazing job putting it all together. The sound, especially of the rhythm section — oh, it’s phenomenal. It’s really, really crunchy, punchy, big.”

The vocalist made bold claims about how the new album compares to the original classic.

“I think it’s miles above ‘Mindcrime I’ — absolutely. Especially the bottom end — the bass and drums, rhythm section. It’s so modern, so huge. If you listen back to the ‘Mindcrime I’ album, it sounds like… I think it was one of the three first digital recordings made, and so it has a brittleness to it that you just don’t hear anymore, ’cause the technology has gotten so much better now,” Tate explained. “The analog-to-digital converters are so much more sophisticated now. So, yeah, it sounds miles about that. I’m very happy, very happy with it.”

Tate’s ambitious claims about the upcoming album come as he prepares to conclude the conceptual trilogy that began nearly four decades ago with the original masterpiece.

Blabbermouth reported that ‘Operation: Mindcrime III’ is scheduled for release in May 2026. The first single “Power” is expected to be released the week following March 12, 2026. The album represents the culmination of a series that began with the landmark 1988 concept album that established Queensrÿche as progressive metal pioneers.

The upcoming release takes a different narrative approach compared to its predecessors. Blabbermouth noted that Tate explained the album exists “in the same universe, but a different perspective. It’s X’s perspective. It’s happening in time at the same time as ‘Mindcrime I’.” This shift in storytelling focus offers fans a fresh take on the familiar dystopian world while maintaining the conceptual integrity of the series.

The album continues the story of Nikki, the drug addict-turned-assassin who becomes manipulated by the shadowy figure known as Dr. X. Blabbermouth confirmed that this third installment maintains the concept album format with a complete storyline. This ensures that the trilogy concludes with the same narrative depth that made the original so compelling.

The production team behind ‘Operation: Mindcrime III’ brings modern expertise to the classic concept. John Moyer, best known as Disturbed’s bassist, serves as producer for the project. He brings his experience from one of metal’s most successful modern acts to Tate’s vision. The collaboration represents a meeting of classic progressive metal songwriting with contemporary production techniques. This potentially delivers on Tate’s promises of superior sound quality compared to the original 1988 recording.

‘Operation: Mindcrime III’ is scheduled for release in May 2026.
