Kiss bassist Gene Simmons recently appeared on the new season of the ‘Pop! Talk’ series where he discussed his career and revealed the Kiss song he struggles to perform. During the conversation, the bassist was asked what element embodies the band and himself the most. The rocker, rather than reflecting it on himself, shared the hit that now embodies the band. He said:
“It doesn’t matter to me which song I like or anything. I’ve always been the American idea which really is an astonishing idea of the people, for the people, by the people. The power rests with them. I remember Paul [Stanley] coming and say, ‘I think I got one,’ and I go, ‘Yeah? What is it?’ He goes, ‘I Was Made For Lovin’ You.’ I go, ‘Oh, that’s really good.”
Simmons went on to share his conversation with Stanley and his initial reaction to the lyrics:
“What’s the first line?’ ‘Tonight.’ ‘Oh yeah, that’s really good, what’s the next line?’ ‘I’m gonna give it all to you.’ ‘Oh, I know what ‘it’ is, so I’m gonna give ‘it’ all to you. Yeah, what’s the next one?’ ‘In the dark.’ I said, ‘F*ck, that’s great, and then what’s the next line?’ ‘Something I wanna do…’ ‘Oh yeah, I know what you mean by ‘something,’ great.”
Although the rocker’s part in the song has become popular, initially, he did not want to do his part the way he sings it now. He revealed how he wanted to do it and admitted having a hard time with it:
“What’s my part?’ ‘[sings the melody at the beginning of the song] Do, do, do, do, do, do, do…’ ‘No, I can’t do that, how about [sings the same part in a lower tone]?’ ‘Nope, nope, [sings the same part].’ So I still have a hard time doing that live, and it gets huge great stadiums full of people jumping up and down like locusts from the Biblical times.”
He also made it clear that no matter how hard it gets for him, it’s never about himself but for the fans.
Elsewhere, the bassist earlier revealed that he hates the song for having to sing the same particular part over and over again, claiming that he didn’t want to sound like his grandma. No matter how many fans got to know the band with ‘I Was Made For Lovin’ You,’ it will not change the fact that Simmons dislikes the song until he claims otherwise.
