Exodus and Slayer guitarist Gary Holt recently addressed speculation about the possibility of Slayer recording new material. He clarified the band’s current status in a statement shared on Guitar World.
When asked directly about whether he could picture Slayer recording together again, Holt provided a definitive response about the band’s future plans.
“No. Slayer’s done recording and touring,” Holt said. “But everybody’s enjoying each other’s company and having fun at these occasional shows. And the world’s a big place.”
The guitarist went on to explain the band’s approach to their sporadic live appearances and his role in future decisions.
“Slayer can pop up in a lot of different places for many years and never be in the same spot twice,” he continued. “That’s all up to [vocalist and bassist] Tom Araya and Kerry King. I don’t make those calls. But when they call, I show up.”
This statement comes as Slayer has performed a few shows over the past couple of years. These performances led to fan speculation about a potential return to recording.
Holt’s comments provide clarity on the band’s status following their extensive farewell tour. The tour marked the end of an era for the thrash metal legends.
Ultimate Classic Rock reported that Slayer’s farewell tour officially concluded on November 30 at The Forum in Los Angeles. This marked the end of their “Final Campaign, the Last Leg” U.S. tour. The complete farewell tour spanned 18 months across seven legs. It featured more than 140 shows in 40 U.S. states and over 30 countries.
Holt’s role in Slayer began during this farewell period. Metal Injection noted that Gary Holt joined Slayer as a touring guitarist during the farewell tour, which began in May 2018 with dates featuring Lamb of God, Anthrax, Behemoth, and Testament. The press release confirmed Paul Bostaph on drums for the trek. This established the touring lineup that has continued into the reunion performances Holt references.
The significance of the farewell tour’s conclusion cannot be understated for the band’s legacy. Slayer’s official website confirmed that the final two shows of Slayer’s farewell tour took place in Los Angeles. The band thanked fans for their support throughout the “Final World Tour (also known as the Farewell Tour).” This established the official end point before any subsequent reunion performances.
Holt’s position as a supporting member rather than a core decision-maker explains his deference to Tom Araya and Kerry King regarding future plans. His commitment to appearing when called demonstrates the respect and camaraderie that remains within the band’s extended family. This continues even as they maintain their stance against returning to regular recording and touring activities.
