Foreigner has officially canceled their farewell tour plans and will continue as a band following Kelly Hansen’s departure. Bassist Jeff Pilson confirmed this in a recent interview with Billboard.

Pilson explained the band’s decision to move forward with new vocalist Luis Maldonado. He outlined how the transition occurred organically.

“There’s just a lot of forward movement, and the band is incredibly excited,” Pilson said. “What started off as being a farewell tour now ended up being Kelly’s last tour and (the band) moving forward.”

The bassist expressed appreciation for Hansen’s contributions to the band. He acknowledged Hansen’s desire to step away.

“We’ve had a great run together, and he (Kelly Hansen) deserves to have a wonderful life,” he continued.

Pilson revealed that Maldonado’s emergence as Hansen’s replacement happened naturally rather than through a planned audition process.

“Luis (Maldonado) really had no intention of this,” Pilson explained. “He was trying to talk Kelly into staying. And when it became clear Kelly really wants to live a life now…Luis just stepped up and, oh my God, that voice came through. We knew he could sing really well, but we were never thinking in terms of him replacing Kelly — so I would say no, we didn’t know exactly how well he could sing. But we knew he was great.”

“He started doing shows with Michael (Bluestein, keyboardist) and Bruce (Watson, guitarist), acoustically, and once people started hearing him sing the Foreigner songs, it was like, ‘Wait a minute; what do we have here?!’ It happened organically, which is beautiful.”

This dramatic shift in plans represents a significant reversal for the legendary rock band. The band had been preparing fans for their final chapter.

Ultimate Classic Rock reported that Foreigner initially announced their farewell tour plans in 2022. The tour officially began in 2023. The decision to continue beyond what was meant to be their final bow marks a notable change in direction for the band that has been a staple of arena rock for decades.

The transition timeline has been carefully planned to ensure continuity for fans and the band’s touring commitments. American Songwriter noted that Hansen’s final performances will occur during the North American leg of their summer tour in 2025. Maldonado will assume full vocal duties for the remaining dates scheduled through March 2026.

The band’s decision to continue comes at a particularly significant time in their career. Wikipedia documented that Foreigner was recently selected for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. This recognition acknowledges their substantial impact on the 1970s rock scene and their enduring influence on arena rock music.

Pilson emphasized that the entire organization supports this new direction. He noted that having the whole team work together has created a positive atmosphere for the band’s future. The decision to abandon farewell plans places Foreigner alongside other iconic bands like The Who and KISS. These bands have also reassessed their retirement announcements in recent years. This demonstrates that the call of the stage often proves stronger than initial farewell intentions.
