Foo Fighters’ bassist Nate Mendel recently commented on the band’s new drummer Ilan Rubin. He highlighted Rubin’s exceptional musicianship and seamless fit with the group, according to Rockin’On Magazine.
Mendel expressed his admiration for Rubin’s ability to understand the band’s musical style while bringing his own attention to detail. He explained how quickly the drummer has adapted to the group despite their brief time together.
“Ilan really listens to every single note. He plays in the same style we’ve always done, but at the same time, he carefully picks up on the subtle nuances. Because of that, when we play together, it just clicks, and we mesh so smoothly,” Mendel said.
The bassist revealed that he recently learned Rubin has been performing in bands since his early teens. This surprised him given their short three-month acquaintance. “We were just talking the other day, and I found out for the first time that Ilan has been playing in bands since he was about 11-13 years old. I remember thinking, ‘Oh, really? We’ve only known each other for three months!’ (laughs),” Mendel recalled.
Mendel concluded by joking about Rubin’s natural integration into the band. He suggested the drummer’s smooth transition seemed almost too perfect. “The way he fits in so naturally is almost unnatural. I wonder if he was given something to eat (laughs), or… he’s getting a lot of money behind the scenes (laughs). Anyway, I’m not worried about Ilan at all,” he said.
Ilan Rubin officially became the new drummer for the Foo Fighters in 2025. This appointment marks a significant moment in rock history, as the drummer takes over one of the most prominent drumming roles in modern rock music. Modern Drummer reported that Rubin replaced Josh Freese. This transition represents a major shift for the band, which has been a cornerstone of rock music since its formation in 1995.
Rubin brings an impressive pedigree to the role. Wikipedia identifies him as a highly respected multi-instrumentalist and drummer. He is previously known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, Paramore, Angels & Airwaves, and his own project The New Regime. His diverse musical background and technical proficiency made him an ideal candidate to fill the demanding position within the Foo Fighters.
The drummer’s debut with the band came quickly. Modern Drummer reported that Rubin’s first show with the Foo Fighters took place on September 13, 2025, at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California. Dave Grohl confirmed him as the band’s official drummer during the performance. Rubin demonstrated his ability to handle both drumming and backing vocal duties, showcasing the versatility that makes him such a valuable addition to the lineup.
Rubin’s background as a multi-instrumentalist and singer strengthens his fit within the Foo Fighters. Beyond his drumming prowess, he can contribute backing vocals and play additional instruments. This adds depth to the band’s musical arrangements. His versatility aligns well with the band’s collaborative approach to songwriting and performance, allowing for greater creative possibilities as the Foo Fighters continue to evolve their sound.
