Five Finger Death Punch guitarist Zoltan Bathory shared insights about the band’s catalog sale strategy in a recent interview with Audacy Music.

Bathory addressed the band’s decision to re-release their music. He drew parallels between their situation and Taylor Swift’s well-known battle over her masters.

“Yeah, it’s pretty common in the music industry. Like outside in from the music people don’t really know that this actually happens. But record labels do trade or sell masters many times without letting the artists know or having the chance even to participate,” Bathory said.

He elaborated on the Swift comparison: “It’s literally like Taylor Swift did what she did. It was a brilliant move. And many artists when it happens to them, they are helpless and they don’t really have an answer. And some artists go like, ‘You made your move, now we’re going to make ours.'”

Bathory highlighted their fan base’s loyalty: “Taylor Swift has a rabid fan base. A very hardcore fan base. So when she put that at the new songs, the fan base just simply switched to the new streams. It just happened. So that we have probably the craziest fan base on the planet. These guys are with us since day one literally. I mean it’s the most loyal fan base. So probably the same thing going to happen.”

Artists increasingly take control of their musical catalogs through re-recordings. The band’s response reflects this growing trend.

The conflict between the band and their former label sparked this strategic move.

Reporting from Loudwire revealed that the band’s former label sold their masters without notification. Five Finger Death Punch had co-owned these masters with the label. The band never received an opportunity to purchase the masters before the sale.

The PRP noted the band’s immediate response. They began re-recording their classic tracks. A 20th anniversary hits collection is now in development.

This approach mirrors Taylor Swift’s strategy for reclaiming her musical legacy. It demonstrates how artists now actively protect their creative rights.

The band’s re-recording initiative marks a significant industry development. Their actions may set a precedent for other rock bands facing unauthorized catalog sales.
