Exodus’ Steve Souza Explains How Metallica Transformed From A Thrash Band To The Biggest Band In The World
Exodus frontman Steve Souza spoke in a recent interview with ‘Shockwaves Skullsessions’ and talked about the success of Metallica.
In the conversation, Steve pointed out that Metallica’s success wasn’t just a bit of luck and revealed the main reason why they are considered as the best metal band in the world.
Steve revealed the conversation he had with Slayer’s Tom Araya a long time ago, in which he was saying that playing heavy sounds is the only way to stay at the top of the scene.
While he was referring to this conversation and mentioning the fact that music will become heavier as society gets heavier, Steve said that Metallica managed to become the best metal band in the world from being a thrash band just by playing heavy all the time.
Here is what Steve Souza said:
“Tom Araya told me one thing long, long, long ago. He said, ‘Zetro, just stay heavy and everything else will fall into place.’
And he’s right. Who’s the biggest band in the world? They’re a thrash band. If you really look at it from the beginning, the biggest band in the world is a thrash band.
I had a guy, a very good friend of mine, and I remember the conversation fucking vividly. And he said, ‘Do you ever think Metallica will ever have a number One record?’ And I said, ‘Of course I do.'”
And he was trying to rip me apart, going, ‘It’ll never happen.’ And I said, ‘I’m gonna tell you something’ — and this is 1985 — ‘as society gets heavier, so will the music.’
And look, here we are — 35, 36 years later, and who’s the biggest band? Not just the biggest thrash band in the world — the biggest fucking band in the world.”
