Former W.A.S.P. guitarist Chris Holmes is currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. His wife and manager Catherine Savean Holmes revealed the diagnosis through a GoFundMe campaign she launched to help cover mounting medical expenses.
An administrative error left the couple with significant out-of-pocket costs. Chris is unable to travel or work while receiving radiotherapy in France, making the financial burden even more pressing.
In her statement, Catherine explained the difficult circumstances that led them to seek public support once again:
“We never imagined we would have to write something like this again. In 2022, just after two years of Covid lockdown, Chris faced throat cancer. A GoFundMe carried us through an impossible moment. We were deeply grateful, and we hoped we would never have to ask again.”
“Today life has placed us in another hard situation, and we want to speak about it honestly. Chris has begun radiotherapy in France for prostate cancer. The treatment is essential and cannot be interrupted.”
She went on to describe the administrative issue that has left the couple facing a growing financial burden:
“Because of an administrative error linked to our marriage registration, the health insurance system placed Chris under ’emergency only’ coverage. He had to wait three months before receiving any care at all, and only the radiotherapy given during the month of July is covered. Everything else falls to us. This has already left us with €20,000 in medical debt, and the treatment ahead will keep adding to it every month.”
Catherine also addressed why Chris is unable to generate income during this period, and made a direct appeal to fans:
“Chris must remain in France to receive radiotherapy. Leaving the country would risk his emergency status lapsing, so he cannot travel and therefore cannot work. Chris has given everything to his music and to the people who listen to it. It is his whole life. Today we cannot carry this alone. We are grateful to France for granting the emergency coverage that allowed Chris to begin radiotherapy. Now we ask, humbly, for help covering everything else.”
She closed with a heartfelt message to those who may not be in a position to donate financially:
“If you are able to give, even a small amount, it goes directly to the medication, medical exams, and transport Chris needs to finish his treatment safely. And if you cannot give, your messages, your love, and your presence mean just as much.”
The GoFundMe campaign remains active as Chris continues his radiotherapy treatment in France.
Holmes, 68, is required to remain in France throughout the duration of his radiotherapy. This makes it impossible for him to tour or perform. The campaign is seeking a total of €50,000 to cover the full scope of his treatment costs. The couple is already carrying approximately €20,000 in medical debt.
Holmes first confronted a major health scare in 2022, when he was diagnosed with throat and neck cancer. That battle also prompted a GoFundMe campaign, which helped carry the couple through what Catherine described as “an impossible moment.” His recovery from that illness made the current diagnosis all the more difficult for those close to him.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men after skin cancer. Radiotherapy is one of the established frontline treatments for the disease. Its effectiveness depends heavily on the continuity of the treatment schedule, which is why Holmes cannot afford to leave France or interrupt his care.
The administrative error that triggered Holmes’ insurance complications stemmed from an issue with his marriage registration. It resulted in his coverage being downgraded to emergency-only status, leaving the couple responsible for the bulk of his medical costs. Only the radiotherapy administered during the month of July falls under covered care. All other expenses — including medication, diagnostic exams, and transportation — fall entirely on Holmes and his wife.
Catherine’s appeal reflects both the urgency of the situation and the couple’s determination to be transparent with fans and supporters. Holmes has spent decades as a defining figure in heavy metal, most notably as a guitarist for W.A.S.P. The outpouring of support from the rock community has been a consistent source of strength throughout both of his health battles.
