Former Metallica bassist Ron McGovney has confirmed that he was not invited to Black Sabbath’s final show. This confirmation came through a recent exchange shared on X (formerly Twitter).
The revelation came in response to a direct question from a fan about whether McGovney received an invitation to the Black Sabbath event.
When asked “Ron, they invite you to the Black Sabbath event?” McGovney responded simply: “No.”
McGovney served as Metallica’s bassist from 1982 to 1983, before being replaced by Cliff Burton. The brief exchange highlights the ongoing distance between the former band member and his ex-bandmates regarding significant music industry events.
This exclusion reflects a pattern of estrangement that has persisted for decades since McGovney’s departure from the band.
Wikipedia documented that McGovney’s time in Metallica was marked by significant tension. He often clashed with bandmates Lars Ulrich and Dave Mustaine and felt more like a provider of money and transportation than a respected member. His departure in December 1982 came after mounting frustrations with his role in the band. This contributed to his decision to leave the group before they achieved mainstream success.
McGovney largely stepped away from the music industry entirely following his exit from Metallica. Ultimate Metallica reported that he sold most of his musical equipment and distanced himself from the metal scene that would eventually make his former bandmates global superstars.
The bassist made only rare public appearances in subsequent years. One notable exception was his participation in Metallica’s 30th anniversary celebration in 2011. Metal Archives noted that this reunion was one of the few times McGovney reconnected with his former bandmates in a public setting.
His absence from the Black Sabbath final show invitation list suggests that the relationship between McGovney and Metallica remains distant. This distance persists despite the passage of four decades since his departure from the band.
