Ron McGovney, former Metallica bassist, addressed a fan’s question about playing Metallica songs on X (formerly Twitter).

A fan inquired, “Hey Ron, quick question as a bass player I’m curious do you enjoy playing and recent Metallica songs if so which ones?”

“I don’t play anymore. That ship has sailed,” McGovney stated.

His response highlights a complex history with the legendary metal band that extends beyond four decades since his departure.

Ultimate Metallica documented McGovney’s entry into the band in October 1981. He joined after James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich formed the group. His contributions included work on early demos such as ‘Power Metal’ and ‘No Life ‘Til Leather.’

McGovney has maintained his ties to the metal community through the years. Wikipedia noted his special appearance at Metallica’s 30th-anniversary show in 2011. He performed classic tracks ‘Hit the Lights’ and ‘Seek & Destroy.’

Metal Addicts revealed McGovney’s satisfaction with his decision to leave the band. He valued personal freedom over financial potential. His time with Metallica concluded in December 1982 when Cliff Burton took his place.

McGovney stays connected with fans through social media platforms. Loudwire reported his sharing of historical items. These include the band’s original business card, preserving his connection to metal history.
