Elton John Says He Doesn’t Want To Play Live Again
75-year-old music icon Elton John recently gave an interview to Chicago Tribune and admitted that he doesn’t want to play live shows anymore.
On January 24, 2018, Elton John announced that he would retire from touring and embark on a three-year farewell tour. The first show occurred on September 8, 2018, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. John’s retirement decision stemmed from his desire to spend more time with his family.
John played at the Western Sydney Stadium on March 7, 2020. After that show, he postponed the remainder of the tour due to the pandemic. In January 2022, the musician continued his farewell tour with a show in New Orleans, Louisiana. The musician’s farewell tour, featuring over 300 concerts worldwide, is scheduled to end in January 2023 in New Zealand.
Apart from the tour, Elton John also worked on composing the score for the Broadway musical version of the novel ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and its film adaptation. The musical will head to Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre between July 19 and August 21, and it will visit New York City by 2023.
In a recent interview with Chicago Tribune, Elton John revealed that he wants to be at home with his family and doesn’t want to play live again. The musician then talked about the musical and stated he immediately accepted the offer to partake in this new project. According to John, the Broadway project was appealing because he wanted to make the music modern.
Speaking to Chicago Tribune, Elton John said the following:
“I don’t want to play live again because it means I would have to travel.”
Revealing thoughts on his new project, he stated:
“I almost immediately said yes. Music and fashion go hand in hand, and it’s a great story. We sat down and approached the fact that the movie was 20 years ago, and a lot has changed. Social media, #MeToo, Black Lives Matter. We thought, we just can’t put in this scenario from 20 years ago. We have to make it modern. We have to bring it up to date.
That also appealed to me because I wanted to make the music modern. And it’s a woman’s story. So I said I’d like to have a woman as the lyric writer. I was sent three brilliant female lyricists, and I picked Shaina Taub. It was a good choice. We’ve hit it off so well.”
So, Elton John’s desire to focus on his family and spend more time with them outweighs his willingness to perform live. Besides, John is now past retirement age, so it’s not surprising that he doesn’t want to be on the road like his many other peers.
