Dream Theater’s John Petrucci On Losing Their First Grammy To Foo Fighters
Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci spoke to No F’n Regrets and recalled their first Grammy nomination and how Foo Fighters reacted when they won the award. Also, the guitarist shared his thoughts on losing the award that day and talked about their latest nomination.
The 54th Annual Grammy Awards took place on February 12, 2012, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to award the most influential and successful musicians and their records. The ceremony was hosted by rapper and record producer LL Cool J. Several musicians, including Radiohead, Adele, Kayne West, Foo Fighters, and Bruno Mars, attracted great attention by receiving many nominations during the award ceremony.
Moreover, Foo Fighters’ White Limo’, Dream Theater’s ‘On the Backs of Angels,’ Mastodon’s ‘Curl of the Burl,’ Megadeth’s ‘Public Enemy No. 1,’ and Sum 41’s ‘Blood in My Eyes’ were nominated for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance. Foo Fighters’ song ‘White Limo’ won the award, and during his recent conversation, Petrucci revealed how Dave Grohl reacted.
It was Dream Theater’s first nomination, and they were pretty confident about their work. After the announcement of the results, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl said that he believes Dream Theater should have won the award. During his appearance, the Dream Theater guitarist also expressed his views about their third Grammy nomination.
The musician highlighted that it’s an honor to be competing with such worthy opponents as Gojira and Mastodon. The 64th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will start on January 31, 2022, and Dream Theater’s ‘Alien’ was nominated for Best Metal Performance. Now their fans are wondering whether they are going to win it.
Petrucci recalled these times saying:
“The first Grammy nomination we had, Foo Fighters were on there. They won it. I remember Dave Grohl had said something like, ‘Oh, they should have got this,’ which I thought was nice, but this time, I don’t know if I’m going to remember all of the other artists that were nominated, but I think it’s Gojira and Mastodon and it’s a cool list.
I remember there were a couple of years where I was surprised at the nominees — it seemed a little bit strange — but this seems appropriate. So we’ll see. It’s fun. It’s an honor to get nominated. It’s cool. Doing what we do and the way that we do it and getting recognized in that world is something that I never would have expected. Now for us, this is the third nomination, so it’s cool. It’s a good feeling.”
