Mike Portnoy has addressed fan criticism regarding Dream Theater’s shortened setlist format during their European tour. He responded to concerns raised after the band’s opening show in Finland via Instagram.

The drummer’s response came after fans expressed disappointment about the show’s format and duration compared to previous performances.

“I’ve seen some discussion online about the fact that last night’s opening show in Finland was a single set and not two sets with intermission,” Portnoy said.

He explained the varying nature of the tour’s format across different venues and markets.

“For the record, a lot of these summer headlining shows will have different formats; some will be a single long set, and some will be two sets with an intermission,” he continued. “Different promoters have booked and bill the shows differently. Sometimes the venues have curfews, etc. Honestly, I’m not sure the rhyme or the reason to it. But I too am having to adapt to each one when writing the setlists.”

Portnoy emphasized his attention to setlist curation. He acknowledged the constraints of the tour format.

“But anybody attending a ‘headlining’ show can know that I’m very attentive to ‘the songs’ when writing new sets for places we already played vs. playing places we haven’t yet,” he said. “But the set length and format itself vary from market to market and situation to situation. It’s a little different when doing a summer EU ‘festival’ tour rather than doing an entire leg of our own shows every night.”

The controversy arose after fans noted the Finland show lasted two hours compared to previous three-hour performances. They also criticized the higher ticket prices for what was marketed as “An Evening With” Dream Theater.

This situation reflects broader challenges facing progressive rock bands when balancing fan expectations with practical touring constraints across different markets and venue types.

Setlist.fm data revealed that Dream Theater’s 40th Anniversary Tour features a consistent core setlist that includes songs like “Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper” and “Act I: Scene Two: I. Overture 1928.” The overall set length varies significantly by venue and market demands.

The tour format challenges are further complicated by the mixed nature of the European dates. Setlist.fm data showed that some shows are part of larger festivals like the Sweden Rock Festival. Set times and formats may differ significantly from standalone headlining performances. This creates inconsistency in fan experiences across different markets.

Fan discussions on platforms like Dream Theater Forums have highlighted the ongoing debate about value for money. Many longtime supporters expressed frustration over paying premium prices for shorter performances that feel more like extended festival sets rather than the comprehensive “Evening With” experiences they’ve come to expect.

The band’s approach to setlist variation has historically been a defining characteristic of their live performances. The current tour’s format constraints have forced adaptations that some fans view as compromising the traditional Dream Theater concert experience.
