Dream Theater fans, we’ve got one good and one bad news about the band’s future. The good news? The band is fully committed to continuing with new projects. The bad news? Even they don’t know what’s coming next.
In a recent Q&A video on their official YouTube channel, Dream Theater addressed their future plans. When asked if they already had ideas for the next album, keyboardist Jordan Rudess gave an open-ended response.
“Well, I think that every album we do. We’re a band. That’s always learning,” he explained. “We’re growing. We are exposed to different kinds of music. In my case, different kinds of technology. There’s no shortage of inspiration for music or ideas or themes and so I think that we don’t know what’s coming up next.”
While it’s clear that Dream Theater is eager to explore new creative directions, they haven’t locked in any concrete plans yet. Rudess reassured fans that they will undoubtedly come up with something great:
“We’re kind of open, and I’m sure there won’t be any problem coming up with a bunch of cool ideas and a bunch of cool riffs and melodies and themes because that’s what we do.”
This uncertainty follows the release of their 16th studio album, Parasomnia, which arrived on February 7, 2025. The album marks the long-awaited return of drummer Mike Portnoy, who last recorded with the band on Black Clouds & Silver Linings in 2009.
Portnoy reflected on the emotional reunion in an Instagram post:
“Exactly one year ago (to the day!), Feb 7th 2024, the five of us stood in the same room together for the first time in well over a decade…we then spent the majority of the year creating our first album together in 15 years. Today, we can finally share it with all of you.”
He added, “Parasomnia represents everything that is classic Dream Theater… mixing tastes of the past with visions of the future…”
While Parasomnia has been met with positive reactions from fans, the band remains in a state of creative openness. Their North American tour recently kicked off and will run until March 22 in New York City. As for what comes after? Dream Theater is just as curious as their fans.
