Doug ‘Dug’ Pinnick, bassist and vocalist for the legendary rock band King’s X, recently shared updates about the band’s future plans in an interview shared on Laughingmonkeymusic.
The band is actively preparing to work on new material after 46 years together. Pinnick explained the band’s approach and mindset as they move forward with their next project.
“We’ve been talking about making a new record. And I hope we can figure out where, how and get all the stuff lined up. In fact, we’re gonna have a meeting next week — I think, a conference call — to discuss maybe what we wanna do and how we wanna do it now,” Pinnick said.
The bassist emphasized the band’s enthusiasm and longevity in the music industry. “We’re excited about making a new record. After 46 years now, which was our birthday a few weeks ago, and 46 years we’ve been together. And we’re just kind of like a bunch of little kids going, ‘We’re still doing this. And we’re still sounding good and it’s still working. Let’s make another record. What the heck?’ And literally, it’s like we’re one of the oldest bands out there that’s making music, and we’re still like kids in the playground. A little slower, less cantankerous,” he continued.
Pinnick also reflected on the band’s chemistry and longevity. “We don’t fight a lot anymore over parks and things. We’ve learned to trust each other and to believe in each other, like any band. But that’s a secret about a band, if you’re together for 20, 30, 40, 50 years — you know each other real well and you can make love like you’ve never made love before, like old people,” he added.
The announcement of a new album comes at a significant milestone for King’s X. The band has maintained an unchanged lineup for over four decades, as noted on Wikipedia. The current lineup consists of Doug Pinnick on bass and lead vocals, Ty Tabor on guitars and backing vocals, and Jerry Gaskill on drums and percussion. This same trio has defined the band’s sound since its formation in Springfield, Missouri, in 1979.
King’s X is renowned for its unique blend of hard rock, funk, soul, gospel, and progressive rock. This distinctive sound has influenced generations of musicians. Dig Me Out Podcast notes that Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament once declared that “King’s X invented grunge,” highlighting their pioneering role in shaping modern rock music.
The band’s most recent studio album, Three Sides of One, was released in 2022. This release marked a return to form for the legendary group. Metallian highlighted that the album received critical acclaim for its blend of classic King’s X elements and modern production. The album features tracks like “Let It Rain,” “All God’s Children,” and “In the New Age.”
King’s X has established themselves as one of the most enduring and respected bands in rock history through a discography spanning twelve studio albums since their debut Out of the Silent Planet in 1988. The prospect of a new album following the positive reception of Three Sides of One suggests that the band’s creative momentum remains strong. Fans can expect the same quality and innovation that has defined their four-decade career.
