Former Megadeth bassist David Ellefson shared insights about the creation of ‘Tornado of Souls’ in a recent interview with The Metal Voice.

“Once Dave came back into the session, he broke up with his girlfriend, Diana, and he had written the lyrics to ‘Tornado of Souls,'” Ellefson revealed. “Thank God he went to rehab. We got a song out of it! You know what I mean? So, I thought that was great.”

“Because the music was done. We didn’t really have a lyric for it,” he continued. “So finally, bang, he had a lyric. While he was in there, me and Nick put down two tracks because Mike Clink kept looking at me and Nick and go, ‘Guys, have any more songs?'”

The statement offers a glimpse into the creative process during the recording sessions. It highlights how personal experiences shaped the band’s songwriting.

This revelation emerges as part of Ellefson’s ongoing reflections on his Megadeth years and current musical projects.

Reports from Loudwire indicate that Ellefson has explored new musical ventures since leaving Megadeth in 2021. He joined the band Dieth and achieved a milestone by singing lead vocals for the first time in his career.

His work on Megadeth’s classic albums showcased his versatility as a musician. He pioneered the use of five-string bass during the recording of influential records like ‘Rust in Peace’ and ‘Countdown to Extinction.’

The creation of ‘Tornado of Souls’ marks a pivotal moment in Megadeth’s history. It demonstrates how personal challenges and creative processes combined to create memorable music. During Mustaine’s rehabilitation, Ellefson and drummer Nick Menza maintained the band’s momentum by working on additional material.

Ellefson now continues his musical journey with Dieth. The band released their debut album, ‘To Hell and Back,’ in 2023. The record features Ellefson’s first lead vocal performance on the track ‘Walk With Me Forever.’
