David Ellefson, former Megadeth bassist, revealed his lack of communication with Dave Mustaine since leaving the band in a recent interview with Fran Strine.

The interviewer asked about potential contact with Mustaine following his May 2021 dismissal from Megadeth. Ellefson provided a direct response.

“Nope. Not one word. No need to,” Ellefson said. “After that? No, I don’t need to be your friend. I’ll move on.”

Ellefson shared a positive outlook about his life after Megadeth.

“And I feel lighter, to be honest with you,” he continued. “I wake up and every day is a day, like, ‘All right. What are we gonna do today?'”

His comments emerged nearly two years after departing from Megadeth, where he served as a founding member and longtime bassist.

Complex circumstances and controversy marked Ellefson’s exit from the band.

Loudwire revealed that personal grudges and internal resentments within the band influenced Ellefson’s departure. Megadeth later released an official statement announcing their separation. The band cited an already strained relationship that prevented further collaboration.

Ellefson maintained an active presence in the music industry after his departure. Ultimate Guitar noted his expression of “no fear” about leaving the band. He acknowledged his significant career achievements with Megadeth.

Loudwire documented Ellefson’s new venture with Kings of Thrash. He joined forces with fellow ex-Megadeth member Jeff Young. The group performs early Megadeth albums in their entirety. Former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland makes guest appearances with the band.

Ellefson expanded his musical projects by joining The Lucid. He also formed a new band called Dieth in 2023. These moves demonstrated his ongoing commitment to music beyond the Megadeth legacy.

The bassist described his departure as being “kicked out of hell.” However, he has not completely ruled out a potential return to Megadeth in the future.
