Former Megadeth bassist David Ellefson recently shared his candid opinion on the band’s latest studio album. He described it as sounding more like a Dave Mustaine solo record than a true Megadeth release. His comments were made during an appearance on the David Ellefson Show.
Ellefson expressed his perspective on how the band’s sound has evolved since his departure. He offered his honest assessment of the musical direction.
“I hear it, and I go, ‘Okay, this is a Dave solo record,'” Ellefson said. “This is Dave and his new band, Dave and his new guys. It says Megadeth, so obviously it gets all the attention, but realistically, I hear it, and to me it just doesn’t sound like Megadeth. And that’s just me, period. You know?”
The former bassist continued to elaborate on his view of the band’s current phase and Mustaine’s role within it.
“It’s like Dave, doing what Dave does, but with a different set of guys in a new day,” he continued. “And this is Dave’s retirement, you know? So that’s my view on it.”
Ellefson’s comments come at a significant moment in Megadeth’s history. The band has officially announced this album as their farewell to studio recording.
Megadeth’s official timeline revealed that the band released their 17th and final studio album, titled “Megadeth,” on January 23, 2026, through Dave Mustaine’s Tradecraft label in partnership with BLKIIBLK and Frontiers. This self-titled record marks the end of an era for one of thrash metal’s most influential bands.
AXS TV reported that Dave Mustaine has been unusually direct about the band’s final chapter. He framed the record as a deliberate finale that marks the end while the band can still perform at full force. The decision comes ahead of a planned global farewell tour that will give fans one last chance to see the legendary thrash metal pioneers live.
The album’s release was accompanied by special collector’s editions for dedicated fans. Metal Injection noted that pre-orders included a limited-edition 180g Zoetrope Picture Disc, capped at 5000 copies worldwide. This makes it a highly sought-after item for collectors.
BraveWords covered the album’s promotional campaign. The outlet noted that the band shared tracks like “Puppet Parade” as final teasers to the self-titled platter. This built anticipation for what would be Dave Mustaine and company’s swan song.
These comments from Ellefson provide insight into how former band members perceive Megadeth’s evolution following significant lineup changes. They offer a unique perspective on the band’s final studio effort.
