David Draiman, the lead singer of Disturbed, shared a memorable Ozzfest experience during an interview with Full Metal Jackie on KLOS Radio Show Whiplash.
“I think that one of the times that definitely stays in my mind taught me about finding strength to push through,” Draiman recalled. “It was during one particular Ozzfest — I think it was our third one — and Ozzy wasn’t feeling so well that day.”
“He was having a little bit of difficulty. Zakk and Sharon came over to me, asking if I would be willing to take over the set,” he continued. “I said, ‘No. They want Ozzy. They don’t want me.’ I added, ‘I haven’t rehearsed.'”
“I told her, ‘I haven’t rehearsed. I don’t know all the songs by heart.’ She replied, ‘Well, there’s a goddamn teleprompter on the stage. Just read the words,'” Draiman explained.
“I said, ‘Yeah, well, it’s not that simple.’ Ozzy had retreated back into his little vocal area, his draped-off space. He was gargling and using a spray to get himself clear,” he said. “He took a few more minutes before coming back out. He started belting it out, pushing through whatever frog was in his throat. His face lit up, and the energy immediately changed. He not only finished the set but played an additional 15 or 20 minutes. It was inspiring — it really was.”
The incident demonstrates the deep respect between the two musicians, which continues today.
Reports from Blabbermouth highlight Draiman’s profound admiration for Ozzy Osbourne. He refers to Ozzy as “the godfather of metal” and considers him “like a father to all of us” in the metal community.
The bond between the artists will strengthen further at an upcoming milestone event. Coverage from WRAT confirms Draiman’s participation in the ‘Back to the Beginning’ charity show. The event is scheduled for July 5, 2025, at Villa Park in Birmingham, UK. It will mark Ozzy’s final performance as a solo artist.
The timing aligns with a significant moment for Disturbed. The band released the 25th-anniversary edition of their album ‘The Sickness’ on March 7, 2025. This milestone showcases the enduring impact of both artists in the metal scene.
The occasion carries special significance as both musicians reach career milestones. Ozzy prepares for his farewell performance while Disturbed celebrates a quarter-century since their breakthrough album.
