Dave Mustaine recently shared his unconventional idea for how Megadeth’s farewell tour should conclude. He revealed a plan that would keep even him in the dark about which show will be their last, as reported by The New York Times.
The Megadeth frontman explained his humorous approach to handling the emotional weight of the band’s final performance.
“I was joking around the other day about how I thought it would be a good idea to have a bunch of shows booked at the end of this tour, and don’t tell me which one is the real last one,” Mustaine said.
He elaborated on how this surprise ending would unfold for him personally.
“I pictured getting on the tour bus after a gig and heading down the road for a while before someone would spring the news on me,” he continued. “Hey, well, that was our last show. No need to cry your eyes out up onstage tonight.”
This comment reflects Mustaine’s lighthearted take on what will inevitably be an emotional milestone for the legendary metal band.
Mustaine’s remarks come as Megadeth prepares for their extensive farewell tour. The tour will support their final studio album and mark the end of an era for the thrash metal pioneers.
Rogers Place confirmed that the farewell tour will kick off February 15 in Victoria, BC. Canadian dates will wrap March 6 in Quebec City, QC. The tour supports their self-titled 17th and final studio album, which is set for release on January 23, 2026.
The band’s final album carries special significance beyond being their last recording. WMGK reported that the album features a cover of Metallica’s “Ride the Lightning”—a track Mustaine co-wrote before being kicked out of Metallica in 1983. This inclusion serves to “close the circle” on his musical journey.
The farewell tour will extend beyond North America. Fotkai noted that European dates have been announced for May 2026. The band will perform in three Spanish cities: Valencia at Roig Arena on May 25, A Coruña at the Coliseum on May 27, and Bilbao on May 29.
Despite the approaching end of Megadeth, Mustaine has indicated his desire to remain active in music. Eddie Trunk revealed that the frontman wants to stay involved in music in some capacity even after Megadeth winds down. The farewell shows currently have no set end date.
