Former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo discussed Misfits’ influence on metal music in a recent interview with David Ellefson.

“But as I started learning the songs, their [Misfits’] old catalog — all their original catalog — I was blown away at how amazing the songwriting and the lyrics and the structure were,” Lombardo said.

“Simple. Very simple. Straight to the point song structure,” he continued. “And I could see how influential they were, you know, to metal and obviously to Metallica and to a lot of, you know, rock and metal bands.”

Lombardo emphasized the natural influence of Misfits’ straightforward songwriting approach on Metallica’s musical evolution.

The relationship between Metallica and the Misfits extends beyond musical inspiration. Their connection is evident through years of mutual appreciation.

Far Out Magazine documented Metallica’s tribute to the Misfits through their 1987 EP ‘The $5.98 E.P. – Garage Days Re-Revisited.’ The band recorded covers of ‘Last Caress’ and ‘Green Hell’ for this release.

Loudwire revealed another dimension of this influence. Metallica’s Kirk Hammett drew inspiration from the Misfits’ horror themes for his creative work and personal interests.

This musical connection has become a cornerstone of metal history. It demonstrates the lasting impact of the Misfits’ distinctive approach to songwriting.

The Misfits’ formula continues to shape metal music today. Their simple yet powerful song structures serve as a template for numerous bands in the genre.
