Dani Filth Mocks Complaints About Cradle Of Filth’s Controversial Merch Design

Dani Filth recently replied to a complaint about Cradle of Filth’s 1993 t-shirt sporting the phrase ‘Jesus Is A C*nt’ on Instagram.

His post featured a screenshot of a message on Costco’s Facebook community, explaining how employees at the store did not meet demands to remove a customer wearing the shirt, which was allegedly ‘confronting and upsetting a lot of people.’

The poster concluded by saying they would stop shopping at Costco and would contact the General Manager. Filth’s response in the caption read, “As will I, Karen! As will I! Outrageous behaviour!”

The infamous merchandise caused controversy since it first came out, making headlines and landing some fans in trouble with the law. Filth admitted last year that he himself would feel uncomfortable wearing the shirt in today’s climate.

The vocalist explained to the ‘Stoke The Fire’ podcast, “The thing about that shirt was that it was, actually, an anarchic statement, if anything, when we did it, it was just like, ‘Who could you poke with a stick more than anybody else, and it have an overarching effect?’”

“As nasty as it is, I must admit, I would be uncomfortable wearing it now,” he went on. “My girlfriend, we went for a meal, and she inadvertently put it on because it was chilly outside. She had a cut-down version of it, but there was enough of it. And I looked at her in horror like, ‘Oh my god, what are you doing?’ Like, I mean, I don’t want lots of spit in my food, you know? It’s an awkward scenario, but I’m pleased we did [the shirt]; it was good fun.”

The idea for the phrase on the shirt came up during a brainstorming session with other band members while they were working on new merchandise for their tour with Emperor in 1993. Eventually, someone muttered the ‘Jesus Is A C*nt’ phrase, and the band decided to use it for its anarchic sound.
