Dan Reynolds Shares How ‘Intimidating’ Rick Rubin Questioned Every Imagine Dragons Song
Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds made an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. During the show, he claimed that the producer Rick Rubin was quite intimidating as he questioned every one of his band’s songs.
Since their formation in 2008, Imagine Dragons has continued to follow a successful career path. Throughout their career, the band has released four albums which all became commercially successful. Moreover, they recently released a new album three years after ‘Origins.’
On March 8, 2021, Imagine Dragons announced they would release two singles named ‘Follow You’ and ‘Cutthroat’ on March 12. Those tracks appeared as the lead singles of their new studio album ‘Mercury – Act 1.’ The band released it on September 3, 2021, in collaboration with world-renowned producer Rick Rubin.
Speaking about Imagine Dragons’ latest album, the band’s frontman Dan Reynolds told Kelly Clarkson that it was one of their toughest records to work on. He then implied that working with Rick Rubin put quite a lot of pressure on him as he was intimidating. According to what Reynolds said during the show, Rick Rubin questioned him about every song on the album.
After Clarkson asked why the new album was a tough one, Dan Reynolds said:
“Well, first of all, Rick Rubin produced it. He’s a legend in himself. And when you’re sitting down with him…”
Clarkson then interrupted him:
“…You feel intimidated?”
Reynolds then continued:
“Well, I mean, yeah. I’ve never gone over my lyrics with anybody. I’ve always self-produced for the most part, and I always write all the lyrics and melody. While sitting down with Rick Rubin, he wanted to go over every lyric and would question me about it. Like, ‘Why did you say this about that? Do you really feel that way?’
I wanted to hide. And it’s Rick Rubin and his beard. He was like ‘Well…’ and he would say things like ‘You know, that feels like you’re not really being honest.’
That being said, it was great and it’s what I wanted on this record. I wanted someone to push me.”
