Damon Albarn recently shared his experience performing alongside Billie Eilish in an interview with BBC Radio 2. He discussed the moment in detail, reflecting on his first time using in-ear monitors during a live performance at Coachella.
The experience felt surreal to Albarn. He found himself performing in front of a massive crowd of Eilish’s fans.
“I did a gig with Billie Eilish at Coachella. It was the first time I’d ever used in-ears. They had sort of count-ins to tell you when you’re supposed to come in. But I saw myself in front of this huge, vast crowd of Billie Eilish fans,” Albarn said.
The awkward moment he experienced on stage stayed with him. He noted the audience’s reaction to his presence.
“I just couldn’t escape the sense that they were thinking, ‘Is that her dad? What is he doing here?’ She was being so sweet, and I was just like, ‘Oh my God.’ I love her. She’s amazing,” he continued.
Albarn’s candid remarks offer insight into the generational dynamic between the two artists. His genuine admiration for Eilish’s professionalism shines through in his reflections. The Coachella performance marked a significant moment in both artists’ careers, bringing together two distinct musical generations on one of the world’s largest festival stages.
The collaboration took place during Eilish’s headline set in April 2022. According to American Songwriter, Albarn joined her on stage for a special surprise performance. The two artists performed a live rendition of Eilish’s song “Getting Older,” which Albarn had previously covered himself. This performance showcased the mutual respect between the musicians.
The performance extended beyond a single song. Brooklyn Vegan reported that Albarn remained on stage with Billie and Posdnuos from De La Soul to perform the Gorillaz classic “Feel Good Inc.” This multi-artist collaboration highlighted the influence Albarn’s work has had on contemporary music and artists like Eilish.
Billie Eilish’s introduction of Albarn to the Coachella crowd revealed the depth of their relationship. Retro Pop Magazine documented that Eilish praised Albarn extensively, calling him a genius who changed her perspective on music, art, and creation. She also mentioned how Blur and Gorillaz—Albarn’s iconic bands—deeply influenced her since childhood. This underscored the profound impact his career has had on a new generation of musicians.
No official new studio collaboration between the two artists was announced following the Coachella performance. However, Albarn’s recent comments suggest he remains open to future creative endeavors with Eilish. His reflections on the experience reveal not only his humility as an artist but also his appreciation for the younger generation reshaping the music industry.
