Lacuna Coil’s Cristina Scabbia recently spoke about the misconceptions surrounding metal music.
In an interview with Nik Nocturnal, she reflected on what people think about metal music. “Many people think that metal is just noise, or metal has to be connected with Satanism, or it’s a bad thing, but they don’t know better,” she said. “It seems that people are scared about distorted guitars for some reason. They don’t understand. It’s definitely a lack of music culture in a way.”
According to Scabbia, many kids enjoy metal music in video game soundtracks without realizing it. “I can tell that many kids are playing video games that have a soundtrack that it’s clearly metal, and they have no idea that it’s metal,” she proved her point. “So there is space for it you know, they love it.” She pointed out that when they are told the music is metal, they often deny it because they have an outdated idea of what metal sounds like.
Nik Nocturnal added that metal has been gaining more attention in mainstream culture. He mentioned that Gojira was featured in the 2024 Olympics and Knocked Loose performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with a pig squeal, something rarely seen on national television. He also said that musicians today have more confidence to bring metal into bigger spaces because others have already started pushing the limits.
Lacuna Coil is also keeping busy with new projects. The band recently announced their upcoming album, ‘Sleepless Empire.’ It is set for release on February 14, 2025. They will be heading out on a European and UK tour to support the record, with pre-sale tickets available now on their website using the code SLEEPLESS2025.
