Corey Taylor Identifies The Scapegoat Of Slipknot’s Downward Spiral

In a recent interview with Revolver magazine, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor talked about his experiences during the recording of ‘Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses.’ This period marked a significant downward spiral for the band as they tried to overcome internal conflicts and emotional struggles, all of which made the recording process challenging.

Thus, Taylor also criticized the producer of the almost 20-year-old record, Rick Rubin. The signer recalled the period the band worked on the album by saying:

“Oh God, that was such a pivotal time in my life. I was in such a bad place; I don’t really have a lot of memory of the first half of making that album because I was so fucked up all the time.”

He reflected on his thoughts about the content of ‘Vol 3’ as follows:

“We weren’t sure if people were gonna be ready for an album like that; we weren’t sure if we were ready for an album like that. And the recording of it left such a bad taste in my mouth that, to this day, I have a hard time listening to it.”

Blaming Rubin for his distaste in the recording process of the album, Taylor added:

“Obviously, a lot of it stems from how I feel about [producer] Rick Rubin; to me, Greg Fidelman produced that album because Rubin wasn’t there. He just fucking wasn’t. And when he was, it’s like he couldn’t be bothered.”

Slipknot vocalist mentioned the producer’s absence from the project a few more times in the past. In addition, during a solo show in 2011, he revealed that Rubin joined the band at the studio only ’45 minutes a week.’ Then, he explained:

“I respect what Rick Rubin has done. But the Rick Rubin of today is a thin shadow of the Rick Rubin that he was. He is overrated, he is overpaid, and I will never work with him again as long as I fucking live.”
