Cheap Trick frontman Robin Zander has sang the national anthem at the recent NFL games.
Football fans watching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Washington Commanders game on January 12 saw Zander perform the national anthem. Zander wore a Buccaneers jersey and scarf while singing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ at Raymond James Stadium.
Before the performance, the announcer asked fans to donate to relief efforts for those affected by the wildfires in Southern California. Zander sang the anthem a cappella, and when he reached the line ‘and the rockets’ red flare, the bombs bursting in air,’ fireworks were set off from the stadium.
The performance received high praise from both football and Cheap Trick fans. “Finally, someone sang our National Anthem the way is supposed to be sung,” a user commented under the footage. Another fan added, “He is an exceptional singer and most definitely one of if not the greatest rock singer in rock and roll history. He could have been all over the place with high notes with sustain, etc. but he chose to sing it honorable instead of showcasing his own talents.”
Another user wrote: “Perfectly stoic!! I absolutely love Zander. He knows how to sing in every scenario, and knows the emotion of how the lyric should be delivered.”
This wasn’t the first time Robin Zander performed the national anthem. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also invited him to sing on December 24, 2023, before their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Buccaneers won 30-12.
