Puscifer’s Carina Round recently defended bandmate Maynard James Keenan’s provocative lyrical content. She addressed questions about the evolution of the band’s songwriting in an interview with The Needle Drop.

Round’s comments came in response to a question about whether certain explicit lyrical elements in Puscifer’s later work feel forced or unnatural compared to their earlier material.

“When I was asked to join Puscifer, and I heard V Is for Vagina, one of the things I really loved and appreciated about it – and, you know, he does this in Tool and other bands, too – [Keenan approaches] lyrics about unexpected things and makes them dark, and brooding, and serious, and appealing… I loved that,” Round said.

She elaborated on her appreciation for Keenan’s artistic approach to controversial subjects.

“I was hearing this song about oral sex, or whatever, and it was moving, and it was dark, and it was brooding, and it had this groove, but it was also so clever and poetic. I don’t think it’s necessary, in life, to put boundaries on what art can be about,” she continued. “The anger, and sex, the general disbelief and confusion and, I don’t know, hatred – it’s all just as important as love, and darkness, and all the other shit that everybody else writes about all day long. I think he has such a brilliant way of communicating those things. It’s one of the things I was drawn to about him.”

Round concluded by firmly rejecting the notion that explicit content is artificially inserted into their music.

“So, I don’t think it’s shoehorned in. I think it’s very much at the core of what it’s about and everything else that grows around it. Maybe I’m neurodivergent,” she said.

Round’s defense of Keenan’s lyrical approach reflects the deeper artistic philosophy that has shaped Puscifer since its inception. This philosophy distinguishes it from his other musical projects.

Dissecting Puscifer noted that Puscifer serves as more of a personal outlet for Keenan. Some people may not appreciate this since it isn’t explicitly made for the people but for himself. This personal nature allows Keenan to explore themes and language that might seem out of place in his other bands. It creates a space where controversial content feels organic rather than forced.

The creative process behind Puscifer’s provocative lyrics follows a deliberate approach that prioritizes artistic interpretation over literal meaning. American Songwriter reported that Keenan writes all Puscifer lyrics solo, leaving them open for interpretation to strengthen their impact through listeners’ experiences. This method explains why Round finds the explicit content so naturally integrated into the band’s overall artistic vision.

Keenan’s approach to lyrical content across his various projects has consistently challenged conventional expectations. This often leads to misinterpretations of his artistic intent. Ultimate Classic Rock revealed that Keenan has rejected overly literal readings of his work, shooting down suggestions that his lyrics are prophetic or deliberately predictive of world events. This perspective reinforces Round’s argument that the controversial elements in Puscifer’s music stem from genuine artistic expression rather than calculated shock value.

The band’s willingness to tackle uncomfortable subjects while maintaining artistic integrity has become a defining characteristic of their work. Recent releases continue to blend personal reflection with provocative themes. This approach has allowed Puscifer to carve out a unique space in the music landscape. In this space, explicit content serves the broader artistic narrative rather than existing merely for its own sake.
