Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal, former Guns N’ Roses guitarist, has shared his thoughts in a recent interview with Louder Sound.

“Much needed performance experience, for sure. And it was good to be a hired hand rather than the one doing the hiring,” Thal said about his time with the band. “But there was also a disconnection I wasn’t always comfortable with.”

“We’d play these huge arenas, and a lot of times I’d run to the backstage door and step outside and hang with the people there, talking to them and signing things,” he continued. “For me, if I didn’t do that, it didn’t feel real, it felt unnatural in a way.”

Thal served as the lead guitarist for Guns N’ Roses from 2006 to 2014. During this period, he performed in numerous arena shows worldwide.

His contributions to the band’s discography were substantial. Music Radar revealed that Thal performed guitar work on all 14 tracks of the band’s 2008 album ‘Chinese Democracy.’ He received no songwriting credits for the project.

Thal’s musical journey has continued since leaving Guns N’ Roses. Ultimate Guitar noted his active solo career and various artistic collaborations.

The guitarist released a new instrumental album titled ‘…Returns!’ in January 2025. The record features collaborations with guitar virtuosos Guthrie Govan, Steve Vai, and Queen’s Brian May.

This latest project marks his return to solo artistry. It offers him greater creative control than his previous role as a hired guitarist in Guns N’ Roses.
