Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson made a surprise appearance alongside Billie Joe Armstrong’s cover band, The Coverups, in an unexpected crossover moment at the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego.
The surprise collaboration took place on July 23 at the FLOAT venue inside the Hard Rock Hotel. It was part of the Fandom Party, the annual Comic-Con kickoff celebration hosted by Fandom and Z2 Comics, where Dickinson joined Armstrong onstage for a live rendition of Mott the Hoople’s classic “All the Young Dudes.”
“Unexpected crossover last night at the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego,” a Green Day fan account wrote in the caption of the video. “The Coverups were joined by Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson during the Fandom Party for a live rendition of ‘All the Young Dudes.'”
The moment drew an enthusiastic response from fans of both bands. “I learned to listen to rock with Iron Maiden and Green Day,” one fan commented. “I never expected to see Billie Joe Armstrong and Bruce Dickinson on the same stage. What a moment to live.” Another simply called it: “This is epic!!”
The collaboration carried added weight beyond the spectacle of two rock icons sharing a stage. The song choice was far from random — Dickinson had previously recorded “All the Young Dudes” on his 1990 solo album Tattooed Millionaire, making his appearance on the track feel like a full-circle moment decades in the making.
Written by David Bowie and originally recorded by Mott the Hoople in 1972, “All the Young Dudes” has long been considered one of rock’s most enduring anthems. Bowie penned the song as a gift to the struggling band, and it went on to become a defining glam rock classic that has resonated across generations of rock fans.
The Coverups headlined the ninth annual Fandom Party, the official Comic-Con kickoff event. The 26-song set was hosted by Fandom and Z2 Comics at FLOAT at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego. The night is already being remembered as one of the most memorable in the party’s history.
The Coverups are primarily made up of Green Day members. Armstrong leads the band on vocals and guitar alongside Jason White, Bill Schneider on bass, and Chris Dugan on drums. The group performs rock and roll classics outside of Green Day’s own catalog, giving Armstrong and his bandmates a platform to celebrate the music that shaped them.
Dickinson, 67, is widely regarded as one of the greatest vocalists in heavy metal history. He has fronted Iron Maiden since 1981.
