The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon shared his stories about Bruce Springsteen and recalled the moment when he felt sick during their set together.
Fallon once had the chance to sing on stage with Springsteen, and contrary to what you may think, it was Springsteen who offered Fallon to play with him. Well, during the show, The Gaslight Anthem singer was not feeling well.
In a recent interview with Louder Sound, he reminisced about the first day he met Springsteen and why he felt sick during the 2009 show:
“So I go outside, and see Bruce Springsteen walking towards me in his sunglasses, and he goes, ‘Hey, can I play your song with you?’ So literally five minutes later, we’re on stage doing The ’59 Sound with Bruce Springsteen in this tent at Glastonbury.”
But it did not end up with only going on to the stage; there was more to come:
“And it got even crazier that night, because I went out and sang a song with him during his headlining set in front of ninety thousand people. Beforehand, I was, like: ‘I’m gonna throw up,’ I was so nervous.”
Fallon Wrote A Song To Duet With Springsteen

Growing up listening to him, Fallon met his hero with a quick ‘hi’ and a handshake. In his words, the actual meeting part occurred when Springsteen’s son discovered The Gaslight Anthem and showed it to his dad while implying that it sounded like his music but more punk.
That’s when Springsteen reached out to Fallon to play during the same set. After their set together, the two spent time together, and Springsteen even asked Fallon to write a song for them to duet for The Gaslight Anthem’s most recent album, ‘History Books.’ He continued the story:
“I’ve gotten to know him pretty well. He’s like, ‘I’ve got all this life wisdom, and if you want some of it, you can ask me and I will tell you things.’ With the new Gaslight record, he said, ‘Why don’t you write us a duet to sing?'”
Though the excitement was too much for him, he managed to write a song:
“And I basically sat there for months, going, ‘I cannot do this, I cannot write a duet for Bruce Springsteen.’ But then I realised, ‘I’m not gonna do that, I’m gonna write a Gaslight Anthem record and not worry about which one is for Bruce.’ When it came to picking a song, it’s, like, ‘It’s that one, it’s gotta be ‘History Books.” We all knew it.”
The duet takes place in the self-titled album that came out on October 27, 2023. You can listen to it down below.
