Poison frontman Bret Michaels shared a health update after being hospitalized following a series of solo band performances.
Michaels revealed that he pushed through multiple shows — in Charleston, WV, Grantville, PA, and a private concert at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane for veterans, active duty members, and their families — while battling a kidney stone. He was ultimately admitted to the hospital when the pain became unmanageable.
“On this Wisdom Wednesday, the first thing I learned is complete gratitude for the frontline workers, doctors and nurses who this week have recently taken care of me, as the kidney stone (after almost 7 days of waiting it out) would not pass,” Michaels said. “The pain became intense but, as usual, I played through Charleston WV, Grantville PA and a special private show at Fairchild AFB in Spokane for veterans, active duty and their families.”
Michaels went on to explain the moment he could no longer hold off seeking medical attention.
“But immediately, the next day following that show, I was admitted to the hospital, as the pain became too much when the stone would not pass,” he continued. “The operation has been done and is complete & I’m out of post-op recovery, and I’m doing everything within my power to feel better and continue playing great shows for great fans when I’ve got a complete clean bill of health.”
The rock star also took a moment to express gratitude and share a lighthearted note about his hospital arrival.
“Just want to say on this Wisdom Wednesday that I am wise enough to know how important family, friends, fans, doctors and nurses play such a vital role in our everyday health,” Michaels added. “Also just know, they eventually forced me out of my clothes and into a hospital gown lol as I had gone straight from the show to the hospital.”
Michaels has indicated he plans to return to performing once he receives a full clean bill of health.
The hospitalization marks the latest health challenge for a rock veteran who has long refused to let physical setbacks sideline him from the stage. Even before the surgery, Michaels had been openly acknowledging the toll the kidney stone was taking. He posted on social media that the stone was “kicking my butt at the end of the show” — yet he and his band pressed on, determined not to disappoint their audience.
The Charleston, WV date on July 4 and the Grantville, PA show on July 11 were part of his ongoing Live & Amplified Tour. Michaels has made clear he intends to continue the tour once he is medically cleared. Prior to the hospitalization, he had already signaled to fans that a health progress update would be forthcoming, writing that he was “keeping positive at the moment.”
Michaels’ determination to perform despite serious physical pain is consistent with a career defined by resilience. He has lived with Type 1 diabetes since being diagnosed at age 6, when he entered ketoacidosis — a life-threatening condition in which the body effectively begins shutting down. Managing that condition while maintaining a demanding touring schedule has been a defining challenge throughout his decades-long career.
Earlier this summer, Michaels made headlines when he withdrew from Donald Trump’s Great American State Fair on July 4, citing threats he had received as a key factor in his decision. Despite that controversy, he remained committed to his own tour dates and continued performing for fans across the country.
The operation to address the kidney stone has been completed, and Michaels is now in recovery. Fans and fellow artists have rallied around the rock icon, and all indications point to a return to the stage as soon as his doctors give him the green light.
