In a recent appearance on Loudwire Nights, Shinedown’s Brent Smith selected the punk and country musicians who will preserve rock’s future.
The singer expressed his views on a few bands he believes are vital for the evolution of rock and roll, saying:
“You talk about what’s necessary in rock and roll and just music in general, and when I think of what’s necessary and when I think of a band that’s necessary, it is 100 percent, Papa Roach. Those guys are on a different level, man. They’re a different breed, and they make you better. They make you want to be better.”
Smith’s Personal Connection With Jacoby Shaddix

After talking about Papa Roach, Smith went on to reveal his thoughts on the band’s frontman, Jacoby Shaddix:
“I love those guys so much. Me and Jacoby [Shaddix] have known each other for two decades now, and I was a fan in the beginning. I remember the very first time I got a chance to meet him, and then I remember the very first time that we were on a festival show together. He was so welcoming and caring, and he’s been the same dude today that he was, you know, 22 years ago.”
Other Necessary Force In The Rock And Country Scenes

Another musician Brent considers essential in the rock scene is the country music star Jelly Roll, as the vocalist further noted:
“Talk about somebody that is 100 percent necessary. I love that man. I’m so happy for him, and it is so awesome to watch his rise. It could not be more deserving to a guy — it didn’t happen overnight. This dude has been working his a** off…he is a hard, hard worker, and it is so inspiring the watch. He’s a dear friend, and I love him so much.”
Roll’s Inspiration From Smith’s Vocal Talent

Smith had a chance to see both Papa Roach and Roll live as Shinedown toured with them in recent years. In 2022, Jerry supported the band in their late summer and early autumn tour, promoting their latest album, ‘Planet Zero.’ During an interview with 93.3 WMMR, Roll shared how inspired he was by Smith’s skill in singing, explaining:
“Before I went out [on tour] with Shinedown… I knew I was going to sing for 45 minutes every night, and I knew I was going to sing in front of who I think is one of the best frontmen in rock n’ roll [Brent Smith]. So, I then took a vocal lesson for the first time.”
Shinedown included Papa Roach in the second leg of their ‘Revolutions Live’ tour, which began on September 3 in St. Louis and concluded on October 20 in Denver, Colorado, covering almost 40 concert dates.
