Billy Joel’s representatives moved quickly to dispel false reports of the singer’s death. They addressed the confusion directly in a public statement shared by Newsday.
A Google search glitch mistakenly displayed information claiming the 77-year-old musician had died. This news worried fans, especially given Joel’s previous disclosure that he had undergone surgery to install a shunt due to a brain disorder.
Billy Joel is alive. Search results for “Billy Joel” on Thursday included an informational box that read: “Died Sept. 17, 2026.”
Joel’s publicist, Claire Mercuri, also issued a personal statement confirming the singer’s wellbeing.
“Billy’s not dead,” Mercuri said. “I was just emailing with him.”
The false information appears to have stemmed from an error in Google’s search results rather than any official announcement. No further details on the cause of the glitch have been released at this time.
The mix-up comes just weeks after Joel opened up publicly about the health battle that had already sent fans into a panic once before.
Joel was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus in the spring of 2025 after falling during a performance. The condition is marked by an abnormal buildup of fluid in the brain that can affect balance, memory and mobility. The diagnosis forced him to cancel a string of concerts, including a highly anticipated show at Madison Square Garden. He stepped away from touring to focus on his health.
Doctors ultimately recommended implanting a small device called a shunt to relieve the pressure. Joel underwent the procedure and later spoke about it candidly. He revealed that he had been hesitant to go through with the surgery at first. He said the shunt has since “improved things” as he continues physical therapy and works to regain strength.
Google addressed the glitch directly, characterizing it as an isolated technical failure rather than any intentional update to Joel’s search profile. “This issue has been resolved and was not a deliberate alteration by Google,” a company spokesperson said. “When individuals tamper with public information sources, it can affect what shows up in search results.”
The timing of the error only amplified concern among fans and loved ones, including Joel’s ex-wife Christie Brinkley. Brinkley has remained close to the singer throughout his recovery and said she is grateful he survived the brain surgery, even as some worries about his health persist.
