Billie Joe Armstrong recently addressed his relationship with his son’s music career. He clarified his role as a parent in an interview shared on Q101.
When asked about balancing support with allowing his son creative independence, Armstrong emphasized that he takes a hands-off approach. He maintains a close musical connection with his son.
“You know, he just does his own thing. I mean he’s really adamant about it,” Armstrong said. “The great thing about it is that we get to talk about music together. I love talking about music when people are in the room because they don’t know what we’re talking about when it comes to chord changes and things like that. It’s almost like we’re speaking a different language, which is really special to me.”
Armstrong highlighted his son’s passion for music and songwriting. He noted that any influence he may have had stems from his DIY philosophy rather than parental control.
“He loves music. He loves singing. He loves writing songs. If I’ve inspired him to do that, I hope it’s just from a place of DIY. That’s kind of the way he approaches it,” he continued. “I am not a stage parent or a ‘dadager’ like at all. He’s my bud.”
Armstrong’s son, Joey Armstrong, has carved out his own path in the music industry. He follows in his father’s footsteps while maintaining his own artistic identity. Metalhead Zone reports that Joey Armstrong was born on February 28, 1995, and grew up immersed in music with both parents supporting his artistic pursuits. He credits the movie School of Rock as a major inspiration for his musical journey, demonstrating that his passion for music developed organically rather than through parental pressure.
Joey’s early career began with the formation of The Raining Souls alongside Cole Becker. The project later evolved into Emily’s Army. Metalhead Zone notes that the band collaborated with Billie Joe Armstrong on their debut album Don’t Be a Dick (2010). This collaboration showcased a natural creative partnership between father and son. In 2015, Emily’s Army rebranded as SWMRS, a punk rock band that gained recognition for its energetic sound. Joey established himself as a talented drummer and musician in his own right.
Beyond SWMRS, Joey has collaborated with various artists and bands, including Waterloo Teeth, The Longshot, and Destroy Boys. Metalhead Zone indicates that his drumming style draws from influences like Fabrizio Moretti, Chris Mars, and Ringo Starr. He incorporates drum machines and programming into his work, creating a distinctive sound that reflects his individual artistic vision.
As of 2024 and 2025, Joey Armstrong has stepped back from the spotlight. In 2022, Cole Becker confirmed that Joey and another band member had stepped away from SWMRS to focus on their personal lives. This marked a shift in his public musical presence. While there have been no major public announcements or new music releases from Joey Armstrong recently, he and his brother Jakob have occasionally performed with their father. They delivered a notable 2020 cover of “I Think We’re Alone Now” on The Late Late Show with James Corden, demonstrating that the family’s musical bond remains strong despite their individual career paths.
