Green Day frontman and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong has revealed why he does not do solos and focuses on rhythm instead.

Growing up listening to the guitarists known for their solos such as Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen, Armstrong thought guitarists were supposed to play solos and be fast and good like Malmsteen all the time. However, his mind changed when he got more into punk and rock music. He explained during a recent interview with Guitar World:

“And I was like, ‘Man, then I’m just gonna end up sitting in my room for the rest of my life. I’m never gonna be in a band, ever!’ That’s when my tastes started changing and I started getting more into punk music and alternative, where it was more about rhythm playing.”

Being an anti-solo guitarist has helped him get popular in the punk rock genre, as they are still known as one of the founders of the genre even after many years. But one particular Green Day album was his peak era as an anti-solo guitarist. The rocker added:

“And also still about great guitar sounds and great solos, but not like the heavy metal thing, which started to become kind of a parody. So what happened was I got more into being an anti-solo guitar player, especially for ‘Dookie.'”

Armstrong Has One More Aim

Armstrong’s initial aversion to flashy playing gradually found balance with his early preferences. This journey brought him to a stage where he feels more at ease showcasing his guitar skills and not afraid of making ‘bad noise.’

Still, the frontman keeps pushing himself for one thing:

“I’ve gotten to a point where I know my limitations, but at the same time I’m really pushing myself to be a better guitar player.”

Green Day’s latest album, ‘Saviors,’ arrived last month, which changed the way Armstrong approached his music. You can listen to the album down below.
