Axl Rose Got The Idea For ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ From W.A.S.P., Blackie Lawless Says

Blackie Lawless recently sat down for an interview with Appetite for Distortion and shared that Axl Roses’s inspiration behind ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ was W.A.S.P.

Guns N’ Roses came together in 1985, and after two years, they released their debut album, ‘Appetite For Destruction,’ which would make a big impact in the music world and become the best-selling debut album in the U.S. It was so well received by the audience and metal circles that it made Guns N’ Roses a worldwide known band with its raw new sound.

The album was introduced with three hit singles, one of which was ‘Welcome To The Jungle.’ Its lyrics explore the dark side of both fame and living in a big city, ironically and meaningfully, as it was the first song of a band that had just stepped into the music industry in a large city.

According to previous interviews, Axl Rose’s inspiration for the lyrics was a homeless man he encountered in New York who told him he was in the jungle and was going to die. However, W.A.S.P.’s Blackie Lawless recently revealed a different source of inspiration.

Blackie Lawless was a guest on the Appetite for Distortion podcast and was asked about Gunners. Lawless recalled meeting Rose in Hollywood after the release of Guns N Roses’ debut album. He stated that he didn’t know about the band at the time but was familiar with them only as part of the old crew.

According to Lawless, while he was at a club, Axl Rose came and introduced himself and revealed that the inspiration behind ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ was his band W.A.S.P.’s ‘Inside The Electric Circus.’ When Blackie asked what he meant by that, Axl replied that the idea of the circus evoked themes like animals, jungle, and chaos to them and was, therefore, the inspiration behind the song.

Blackie Lawless shared the inspiration behind ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ as follows:

“After their first album came out, I was in a club one night in Hollywood, and Axl came up and introduced himself. And I didn’t really know them from the record [‘Appetite for Destruction’] yet; I just knew them from our old crew. And he said, ‘I just wanted to tell you, we’re huge fans,’ he says, ‘We have this song called ‘Welcome to the Jungle,’ and it seems to be doing good.’

And he says, ‘I just wanted to let you know your record ‘Inside the Electric Circus’ gave us the idea for ‘Welcome to the Jungle.” And I said, ‘Well, what do you mean by that?’ He says, ‘Well, we looked at the idea of circus, and there’s animals in the circus, and jungle, and there’s chaos and all that.’ And he says, ‘We just kind of looked at it, and that’s where the idea came from.'”
