M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold discussed the evolving music industry landscape in a recent interview with OpenSea.
The interviewer asked about his creative inspiration beyond touring. M. Shadows offered insights into the significant changes in music distribution and artist freedom.
“The whole landscape of music is exciting right now. Everything’s been turned upside down since the rise of streaming and social platforms. We used to have big gatekeepers like MTV and radio. Now, the internet gives people whatever they want, whenever they want. That makes it harder to stand out, but it also gives artists the chance to make their own rules,” he explained.
M. Shadows elaborated on new creative possibilities in the digital age: “Today, we can experiment, release more or less music, try surprise drops, integrate virtual reality or web3 tools. I see it as a return to artistry. Music used to feel more like commerce for a long time. But if you’re here now, you’re probably doing it for the love of the craft.”
Avenged Sevenfold continues to explore innovative approaches to music distribution and fan engagement.
His comments on industry gatekeeping align with his broader criticism of traditional music business models. A recent report by Louder revealed his criticism of Warner Bros Music. The label had attempted to force a “viral TikTok moment” from the band, creating tension between artistic vision and commercial pressure.
The band’s evolution in the industry reflects both challenges and strategic choices. Metal Injection documented their shift toward a more accessible sound with “Hail to the King.” This move proved their ability to achieve mainstream success while retaining creative control.
Modern touring presents its own set of challenges for artists. Blabbermouth highlighted M. Shadows’ candid discussion about touring difficulties. Rising travel expenses and high crew costs have become major obstacles for bands in today’s environment.
The band maintains its focus on authentic fan engagement and creative independence. They continue to adapt their approach for success in the digital landscape while preserving their artistic integrity.
