Journey frontman Arnel Pineda recently opened up about his vocal abilities and future with the band. He made candid admissions in an interview with Rolling Stone.

The singer addressed ongoing comparisons between his voice and that of former Journey vocalist Steve Perry. He also revealed his desire to step away from the band due to personal issues.

“I actually agree with them, to tell you honestly. You’d be surprised. I agree with them. Steve Perry’s voice is really far superior to mine,” Pineda said.

Despite acknowledging the vocal comparison, Pineda explained his current position with the band. He described their reluctance to replace him.

“But I’m almost 60 now. What can I do? And the band wants to move on with me, and they like the voice that I produce out there with them,” he continued. “They can fire me any time they want, but they’re not.”

The frontman also revealed his attempts to communicate his retirement wishes to the band members.

“Back in 2024, I said to [the band], ‘If you’re planning to do a farewell tour, you better tell me, because my issues and my personal problems are getting more intense, and I don’t know if I want to go with you,'” Pineda said. “As they say, silence can be louder than explaining. I said to them I wanted to retire because of my personal problems. No answer. Obviously, they don’t want to find another singer.”

Journey continues their current farewell tour with Pineda remaining as their lead vocalist. These comments come during this ongoing tour.

Pineda’s candid remarks highlight the ongoing tensions within the band. They shed light on his remarkable journey with Journey over the past decade and a half.

Pineda’s story with Journey began in an unconventional way that has become legendary in rock music history. American Songwriter reported that he was discovered online in 2007. He joined Journey at age 40 as its first Filipino lead singer. This discovery marked a turning point for both Pineda and the band, who had been searching for a new vocalist after Steve Perry’s departure years earlier.

The current farewell tour that Pineda referenced in his comments represents what could be the final chapter of Journey’s storied career. American Songwriter noted that the tour kicked off in February. It has been generating significant attention from fans and media alike. The tour’s timing coincides with Pineda’s personal struggles, including health problems and a divorce, which he mentioned as factors contributing to his desire to step away from the band.

The recent drama surrounding Pineda’s comments has not gone unnoticed by other band members. American Songwriter revealed that Neal Schon has responded to Arnel Pineda’s allegations about trying to leave the band before the tour. This indicates that the internal tensions within Journey continue to play out publicly.

Pineda’s nearly two-decade tenure with Journey has been marked by both commercial success and ongoing comparisons to his predecessor. His honest admission about Steve Perry’s superior vocal abilities demonstrates a level of self-awareness and humility that has characterized much of his time with the band. He continues to perform for audiences worldwide despite his personal challenges.
