Music critic Anthony Fantano recently addressed his legal victory against Ronnie Radke in a defamation lawsuit. He shared his thoughts in a video titled “I Won” on Fantano YouTube channel.

The statement focused on his decision to fight the lawsuit rather than settle. It also addressed his concerns about setting a precedent for future legal challenges.

“I didn’t want to blow this up into something bigger than it needed to be and also on top of it I didn’t want to give the person that was suing me the satisfaction of maybe seeing me squirm or just for him to have the capacity to read into anything I’m doing or saying,” Fantano said.

However, he explained that public pressure and Radke’s behavior forced him to see the case through to completion.

“All of the headlines and Ronnie’s tweets and crash-outs and announcements on this topic publicly essentially put me in the position where I was like I have to see this through,” he continued. “I can’t just allow this to quietly settle in his favor or anything like that because that’s going to send the message that anybody who hates me can just pull up with lawyers anytime I say something they don’t like and shut me down entirely. Honestly, f*ck that.”

Fantano also addressed why he chose not to settle the case out of court.

“Sure, while I could have saved myself some headache by paying Ronald some money and taking the video down, after that I know I wouldn’t have been able to look at myself in the mirror because that would have been a betrayal of how I actually felt and most likely would have created more headaches down the road,” he said.

This marks the first time Fantano has publicly discussed the defamation case since winning the lawsuit.

Fantano’s decision to fight the lawsuit reflects his position as one of the most influential voices in music criticism today. Fortune reported that the critic has built a platform with over 3 million YouTube subscribers that can significantly impact artists’ careers, from streams and album sales to tour bookings.

The legal victory comes amid increasing scrutiny that Fantano faces from both fans and major artists. Derrick Gee’s analysis noted that over the years, he has earned feuds with stars such as Drake, Post Malone, and Tyler The Creator. This underscores the contentious nature of being a prominent and outspoken music reviewer in the digital age.

Fantano’s influence extends beyond simple reviews. His critiques have become cultural touchstones in the music industry. Wikipedia documented that his YouTube channel “The Needle Drop” has established him as “the internet’s busiest music nerd.” This title reflects both his prolific output and his significant impact on music discourse.

The case highlights broader issues about free speech and criticism in the digital age. This is particularly relevant when independent critics face legal challenges from artists who disagree with their reviews. Fantano’s victory may set an important precedent for other music critics and content creators who face similar legal pressures.

His stance against settling the case demonstrates his commitment to maintaining editorial independence. This remained true even when facing potential financial and legal consequences. The outcome reinforces the principle that critics should be able to express their opinions without fear of legal retaliation from the subjects of their reviews.
