New Rush drummer Anika Nilles recently opened up about her relationship with Rush’s music before joining the band as late drummer Neil Peart’s replacement. She revealed in an interview with Louder Sound that she had never actually listened to Rush before.

The discussion arose when Nilles was asked about her familiarity with Rush’s catalogue prior to taking on this significant role.

“As a drummer I was familiar with Neil’s work, of course, especially the song Tom Sawyer. That’s a classic. It’s played a lot in the drum community, as a play-along or even in exams,” Nilles explained.

She went on to elaborate on her surprising lack of exposure to the band’s broader musical catalog.

“But I never really listened to Rush, even though I grew up with rock and progressive music. I listened to a lot of rock, but somehow never Rush,” she continued. “All the songs I’m learning now are new to me. I’m basically starting from scratch.”

This admission highlights the unique challenge Nilles faces as she steps into the role previously held by one of rock’s most celebrated drummers. Despite her unfamiliarity with Rush’s extensive catalog, the band’s remaining members have expressed enthusiasm about working with their new drummer.

Louder Sound reported that Geddy Lee has revealed how much he’s enjoying playing with Nilles during rehearsals for Rush’s upcoming 50th anniversary activities. Lee has praised jamming with Nilles, saying he’s “having so much fun playing along with her” and will miss facing her drum kit once they hit the stage.

The choice of Nilles represents a bold decision by the band. New Noise Magazine noted that while Neil Peart is irreplaceable, the band has made a strategic choice in recruiting the German drummer. Nilles brings her own world-class pocket and technical prowess to the legendary progressive rock trio.

Nilles has established herself as a prominent figure in the modern drumming community through her viral drum cam videos and endorsements from major brands like Tama and Vic Firth. Her career gained significant momentum through online exposure, showcasing her exceptional groove and technical abilities that ultimately caught Rush’s attention.

The transition marks a significant moment for Rush as they prepare for their 50th anniversary celebrations. Nilles takes on the monumental task of honoring Peart’s legacy while bringing her own distinctive style to the band’s iconic sound.
