Alice Cooper Says He Was Trying To Be Like The Yardbirds
In a recent conversation with Raised on Radio, Alice Cooper looked back to the time when he was watching the legendary bands’ performances on TV and said that he formed a band and decided to be like The Yardbirds.
British Invasion, emerged in the ’60s, can be defined as a cultural phenomenon spread mainly in the USA with pop and rock music. The milestone bands from this era were The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Animals, The Hollies, and The Yardbirds. These bands greatly influenced the next generation of musicians who wanted to follow their steps to reach success and popularity.
As one of them, Alice Cooper was inspired by the bands that he saw in musical variety TV shows such as ‘Shindig!’ and ‘Hullabaloo,’ and he discovered another new British band thanks to these programs every week. He admired The Beatles’ performance, so he wanted to form a band to cover their songs with his friends even though they didn’t know how to play an instrument. Probably, the show he was referring to was The Earwigs, which was formed to dress and act like the band members while singing their songs.
In addition, Cooper unveiled that another band that influenced him was The Yardbirds. He stated that he and his friends wanted to sing and sound like The Yardbirds. The band was known as the starting point of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck’s musical careers who later became the most famous guitarists of all time. Cooper added that his favorite Yardbirds song is ‘Happenings Ten Years Time Ago,’ which was released in 1966.
Cooper said in the recent interview that:
“It was so exciting. We had a show called ‘Shindig!’ and another show called ‘Hullabaloo’ and every week we would sit there, we heard The Beatles for the first time and knocked this out. I called my five best friends, and I said, ‘We have to start a band.’ Even though none of us played anything, we all learned how to play The Beatles songs. Then the next week we’d watch ‘Hullabaloo’ and all of a sudden there’s a band called The Kinks. We went ‘Have you seen these guys?’ then we’d see The Rolling Stones and see The Yardbirds, and The Who.
Every band was really exciting and I said ‘We’ve got to do all this.’ It was such as the mass feast of music coming out and every one of those bands was unique to the other ones. We finally decided on The Yardbirds, and we were going to be The Yardbirds band, so the train kept it rolling even though it’s a cover, I think I would say ‘Happenings Ten Years Time Ago’ though from The Yardbirds was my favorite track of theirs.”
