3 Doors Down’s Brad Arnold has passed away at the age of 47 after battling cancer. The band announced this in an official statement released on Facebook.
The band shared the heartbreaking news in a comprehensive statement honoring their founder and lead vocalist.
“With heavy hearts, we share the news that Brad Arnold, founder, lead singer, and songwriter of 3 DOORS DOWN, passed away on Saturday, February 7th, at the age of 47,” the band said. “With his beloved wife Jennifer and his family by his side, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in his sleep after his courageous battle with cancer.”
The statement went on to highlight Arnold’s significant impact on rock music and his lasting legacy.
“As a founding member, vocalist, and original drummer of 3 Doors Down, Brad helped redefine mainstream rock music, blending post-grunge accessibility with emotionally direct songwriting and lyrical themes that resonated with everyday listeners,” they continued. “Brad’s songwriting became a cultural touchstone for a generation, producing some of the most enduring hits of the 2000s, including the band’s breakout hit, ‘Kryptonite’, which he wrote in his math class when he was just 15 years old. His music reverberated far beyond the stage, creating moments of connection, joy, faith, and shared experiences that will live on long after the stages he performed on.”
The band also emphasized Arnold’s character beyond his musical achievements.
“Above all, he was a devoted husband to Jennifer, and his kindness, humor, and generosity touched everyone fortunate enough to know him,” they said. “Those closest to him will remember not only his talent, but his warmth, humility, faith, and deep love for his family and friends.”
The statement concluded with a request for privacy during this difficult time.
“The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time and kindly asks that their privacy be respected,” they added. “He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.”
Arnold’s death comes nine months after he first revealed his cancer diagnosis to the public. The Los Angeles Times reported that in May 2025, Arnold announced that the band would be canceling its summer tour because he had advanced-stage kidney cancer that had spread to his lungs.
The creation of “Kryptonite,” the band’s breakthrough hit, has become part of rock music folklore. The Los Angeles Times noted that Arnold wrote the song as a 15-year-old in algebra class by drumming out the beat on his desk. He later explained that the song was about being put on a pedestal and wondering if people would still stand by you if you fell.
The song’s success helped propel 3 Doors Down to mainstream recognition and commercial success. Music industry reports indicated that “Kryptonite” peaked at number 3 on the Hot 100 and topped multiple charts. Their debut album became the 11th best-selling album of the year and ultimately went septuple-platinum.
Throughout his career, Arnold received significant recognition for his songwriting and vocal abilities. Industry sources confirmed that he received three Grammy nominations, including best rock song for both “Kryptonite” and “When I’m Gone,” and best rock performance by a duo or group with vocal, cementing his place in rock music history.
